My Thoughts
The premise is fantastic, and Martha Wells creates a fascinating world filled with unique magic and political intrigue. Unfortunately, I found the execution difficult to connect with.
The biggest challenge for me was the storytelling. The narrative jumps between timelines, introduces a large cast of characters, and expects the reader to piece everything together without much guidance. While I know many readers enjoy that style, I found it difficult to stay immersed. Instead of feeling curious, I often felt like I was trying to catch up.
I made it to roughly 70% before deciding to put it down. At that point, I realized I was reading because I wanted to finish rather than because I was excited to see what happened next.
That doesn't mean it's a bad book—it simply wasn't the right fit for the type of fantasy I enjoy most.

Final Verdict
I can absolutely see why this book has passionate fans, but it wasn't the right match for my reading preferences. I personally prefer stories that balance rich worldbuilding with a clearer narrative path, so this one ultimately wasn't for me.
