Quick Overview
When the Moon Hatched
If you love getting completely lost in an intricate fantasy world, When the Moon Hatched has a lot to offer.
Spoiler-Free Summary
In a world shaped by dragons, celestial magic, and ancient prophecies, a young woman with a mysterious past is drawn into a conflict far greater than herself. As long-buried truths begin to surface, she must navigate dangerous alliances, impossible choices, and a destiny that could change the future of her world.
My Thoughts
The worldbuilding is imaginative, ambitious, and unlike anything else I've read recently. Dragons, mythology, magic, and history are woven together into a setting that feels incredibly unique. Once I settled into the story, I appreciated just how much thought had gone into creating this world.
That said, this isn't an easy book to jump into. The opening chapters throw a lot of terminology, lore, and history at the reader, and I spent a fair amount of time trying to figure out how everything fit together. If you're someone who enjoys slowly piecing together a complex world, that challenge will probably be part of the fun.
My biggest hesitation was that the romance became more prominent than I personally prefer. I tend to gravitate toward fantasy where the plot drives the story and the romance supports it, rather than the other way around. While I still enjoyed the book, I occasionally found myself wishing the central conflict took more of the spotlight.
Overall, I can absolutely understand why this book has such a passionate fan base. It delivers gorgeous worldbuilding, emotional stakes, and an epic sense of scale. Even though it leaned more heavily into romance than my ideal fantasy, I still had a great time with it and would happily recommend it to readers who enjoy romantasy with rich, immersive worlds.
